Ricardo Still in Hospital--Can't Pay Bill--May 2014

Ricardo still is in the hospital. He has recovered from his abdominal surgery for his ruptured appendix. He and his mom also acquired Chikungunya fever while he was recovering from sugery and they both survived this as well.
However, Ricardo’s mom can’t pay the hospital bill. So the hospital will not allow Ricardo to be discharged and go home. He doesn’t have much of a home to return to, so maybe he is better off detained in the hospital.

Wow. Not sure what my emotion is on this. Frustrated. Happy they got help. Sad that he can’t leave. More sad that leaving means going to a bad place. So much to ponder.

All structural problems that many of us never consider. How many of us have languished for 12 days with a ruptured appendix not operated because we had no money? How many of us have been detained inside a hospital, unable to leave because we had no money to pay our bill?
