Jean-Wendy Revisited--January 2016
Jean-Wendy (Photo by John Carroll)
Dear Politicians,
I know you are very busy but please consider the following:
Just wanted to let you know that Jean-Wendy is still lying in the dirt outside of his shack in the refugee camp near Anse-a-Pitres.
You may remember that he is the 3-year-old toddler who was born in Pedernales, Dominican Republic but was “deported” with his two siblings and his mother Edeline because they are not “documented”. And they have Haitian blood.
Oh, I almost forgot. Jean-Wendy was born blind and deaf. Can’t forget that.
He is not primarily a medical problem. Or a nutritional problem. Or a social worker problem.
He is a political problem. If the politics behind Jean-Wendy were treated, Jean-Wendy would be good.
Would you let your child exist like this? Of course not.
Please help Jean-Wendy.
Thank you.
John

Besides repeatedly contacting our politicians (and getting little to know response) is there anything we can do for this child and his family (and for those like them???) As a mother I cannot imagine what it feels like to be in this situation and be powerless to help your children.
Kathy,
Our politicians could definitely lean on the Dominican and Haitian politicians to help Jean-Wendy. This problem is definitely fixable.
I don’t know what you can personally do with your own two hands for Jean-Wendy. But you can “spread the word” that he needs help. More info is better than no info.
I remember 30 years ago when the little girl was trapped in the bottom of a well. And the world watched via the newspaper and the nightly television news as to whether she would be rescued (she was). But we were riveted with her. Why is Jean-Wendy different?
Now we have the internet that streams things live all over the world. Jean-Wendy is suffering in front of us. We are streaming his situation live. We have no excuses.
Thanks for caring. Sorry my answers are not better.

Before I could send any money, I want you to publish the salary of all your workers online; how the money will spend and what are the benefits Jean-Wendy X will receive.
Matelamot/Gagot,
Haitian Hearts volunteers make no salary. Never have and never will.
We don’t need or want your money for Jean-Wendy. Come to Camp Cadot and bring him some food and vitamins with iron. And bathe him. And pick him up and hold him.
Thanks,
john
