Douna

Douna

I have had this photo of Douna on our dining room wall for a long time.

We lost Douna 10 days ago.

She was a survivor.

She survived the home for abandoned and dying children in Jacmel.

She survived unsuccessful efforts made to send her back to Haiti against the will of her parents.

She survived heart disease, tuberculosis, and sickle cell anemia.

She survived unsuccessful efforts to send her to the wrong pediatric heart surgeon.

Douna was able to return to Haiti twice to visit those she had heard so much about. She survived these trips to an inhospitable land.

She survived for so long.

This photo will stay on our wall.
